Sencelles: the paths of the spirit

Immediately after the conquest (1229), the town of Sencelles made its deep religiosity clear through both its material and intangible culture. One way to discover it, to understand its legacy, is through a route not only around its religious buildings and monuments, but also along the trail left by one of its most celebrated figures: the Blessed Sister Francinaina Cirer.

Can Maví Cross

The Can Maví boundary cross is the most artistically interesting in the whole of Sencelles, as well as being the oldest. It dates from 1732 and is Baroque in style. It is a Latin cross, ornamented both in the spandrels between the arms and along the edges. It bears an image of Christ and an Immaculate Conception, beneath which the construction date can be seen. The iconography is completed by depictions of seraphim. The octagonal shaft is original, but not the six steps, which were torn down during the Second Republic and rebuilt years later.

S'Era d'en Pelat Cross

It is located at the junction of Camí de Binialmara and Carrer del Rector Molinas. It stands in a beautiful viewpoint offering magnificent views of the Serra de Tramuntana and much of the Pla and the Raiguer. It was blessed on 3 May 1900, as recorded on the plinth. The cross has straight arms with cross-shaped terminals. It is accompanied by plant-motif ornamentation and the coat of arms of the Molinas family, who commissioned its construction.

Parish Church of Saint Peter

The town's first church is documented in 1248, but it soon became too small, as by the end of the following century the construction of a second one is recorded. The current building dates from the late 17th and first half of the 18th century. Even so, structural problems were detected towards the end of that century and repairs were needed, as again in the following century following the 1851 earthquake. In the 1880s the deep chancel chapel was built. In terms of its altarpieces, the parish church holds pieces of great historical and heritage value: the main altarpiece is Baroque, the work of Albert Borguny in 1766, featuring a seated image of Saint Peter by the local artist Antoni Llabrés Mudoi, dated 1811. Also worth highlighting are the chapel of Saint Agatha and that of Saint John the Baptist, which contains, among other works, the panel of the Apostles by Mateu López.

Rectory

The rectory building occupies one of the most representative mansions in the town centre, comprising three storeys, with a fine lintelled doorway and an elegant gallery of three round arches on the main floor. It is documented in 1404. The current building, however, dates from the mid-17th century, resulting from the joining together of several dwellings.

Small Chapel on Carrer de Santa Àgueda

On Plaça de l'Obra, located between the parish church and the rectory, there is a small chapel with a beautiful set of Valencian tiles, the work of the artist Enrique Sanantonio, depicting Saint Agatha, patron saint of Sencelles. According to tradition, after months of drought in Sencelles and many rounds of rogation prayers by the townspeople, it rained on 5 February and saved the crops. As a token of gratitude, the people of Sencelles venerate her as their patron saint.

Convent of the Sisters of Charity

The Convent of the Sisters of Charity occupies what was the birthplace of the Blessed Sister Francinaina Cirer (1781–1855), who in 1851 handed it over to the community, which had only just been founded. From then on important works were carried out, particularly the addition of a storey and the porch. Later, in 1945, 1957 and 1986, the convent was gradually enlarged through the acquisition of neighbouring houses. The building, with three storeys, contains the Oratory of Our Lady of Sorrows, which houses the tomb of the Blessed. Also notable are the convent kitchen, a small courtyard with a porch, the Beata's room, a museum room on her life and work, and more.

Sa Cometa Cross

It stands at the crossroads of the Palma and Algaida road, right at the end of Carrer Sor Francinaina Cirer. It was popularly also known as the Cap d'Amunt cross. It is a Latin cross made of local sandstone (marès), with rounded arms. Facing the village it bears a relief of Christ, while the opposite side has no depiction. The cross rises on a hexagonal base. The shaft is octagonal and the capital features moulded details.
